Importance of Sanitation

Sanitation is the hygienic disposal of waste materials and the practice of maintaining health conditions in the environment. It involves all the practices like providing safe water for consumption, proper disposal of sewage, washing hands and consumption of clean foods. These practices aim at preventing diseases hence increase the life span of human beings. Types of sanitation include food sanitation, environmental sanitation, and ecological sanitation. Everyone needs to be educated on the importance of improved sanitation for a better living. The following are some of the benefits of proper sanitation.

Firstly sanitation helps in reducing human risks to diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. These diseases are mostly caused by waterborne pathogens that breed in dirty water. These diseases can be prevented by the intake of clean treated water hence reducing the pathogen load hence controlling the disease.

Secondly, it helps in conserving the environment. For example, when sewages are treated and water is directed to water bodies, the aquatic like will not be at risk of dying. Hence this approach will protect the ecological niche. Also, the rivers become well protected since a lot of people mainly depend on the water for survival.

Proper sanitation is also a benefit to the country at large since the government will not spend much money on treating hygienic related diseases that are a result of poor sanitation. The government hence saves a lot for other development projects that are a benefit to the public.

Another importance of sanitation is that it helps in saving the human race. Many people die of unhygienic conditions leading to a low population in the country. These conditions can be prevented if only people take caution on conserving the environment they live in.

Proper sanitation helps prevent climate change and global warming. Industries that emit poisonous gasses e.g. carbon monoxide and sulfur IV oxide contribute to detrimental changes in the environment. Once these gases are emitted in the atmosphere they destroy the ozone layer which protects the earth from direct sun rays hence causing global warming. However, these gases instead should be treated before getting released into the environment and this will help in preventing the destruction of the climate.

Effective sanitation has helped reduce the very high infant and child mortality rate that is most prevalent in third world countries. This mortality has been caused by a high population increase that is experienced in these countries hence food shortage leading to the consumption of unhygienic foods.

Improves sanitation also has a social impact on the community. This contributes to gender education, equality and poverty reduction. This is mostly impacted on women’s and girls’ lives since they need proper sanitary facilities in order to boost their social lives. When this is improved the female gender gets empowered and this becomes an advantage to the community and country at large.

Another benefit of sanitation is that it helps in the proper disposal of human waste that is also a leading cause of disease transmission in both urban and rural areas. It is advisable to dispose of their human waste into pit latrines to prevent such diseases.
